Information on the Pre Surgery Period of Laser Eye Surgery

Before laser eye surgery, there are procedures to be followed to enable the surgeon to form an adequate idea of the patient’s status and assess how he should approach the surgery.
First of all, patients should undergo full examinations of their eyes, to determine if they are good candidates for eye laser surgery; such examinations also help to establish the possible risks in each patient’s case. Before the eye examination, people wearing contact lenses should stop wearing them for a long enough period and wear glasses instead. Contact lenses tend to change the shape of the cornea, and the measurements taken before surgery can be inaccurate if the patient has worn contact lenses quite recently. The amount of time during which the patient should not wear the contact lenses can be specified with the eye laser clinic. Another question patients should discuss is their present and past medical condition, previous and current diseases, previous eye surgeries or traumas. Patients should inform their doctors about the medicines they are taking, prescription or over the counter medicines, because they can affect their vision or impact the surgery. Allergies to medications should be reported to the doctor. During eye examinations, doctors discuss with their patients their status, the benefits of LASIK, the possible risks, as well as the alternatives to the surgery. Doctors should also inform their patients what they should expect before the procedure, during and after it. As a result of the examination, the decision about undergoing LASIK can be taken.
